The Had Khuat, or Bottle Beach is one of the "old" remote beaches from Ko Phangan. It is well known by long term staying travelers and a hideaway for a lot of people who don't want to be on the expanding beaches like all other beaches on the island. Nevertheless also here building is actual and a lot of new bungalows were built in the last few years.
Until today the bottle beach is only accessible by a taxi boat from Chaloklum. Taxi in Thongsala for Chaloklum/Bottle Beach available. Be aware if the weather changes, it is possible that for a few day's there is no boat available sometimes until the water calms down again. It is not a place for short time tourists so far. Sure there is no problem if the weather condition are quite good. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island due its wide coastline and the mountains covered by dens jungle and quite steep soraunding mountains, (but this "logo" can be given actually to almost all beaches on the east coast). Depending the time and season too! All beaches are actually spectacular for somebody comes the first time to this amazing island)
The wild and quit untouched north-east and east coast of Ko Phangan is the most mountainous region on the island. Steep volcanic hills, covered by primary jungle and newer palm plantation run down to sheer cliffs that dominate the rugged coastline. Only a few beaches occupy this region and all that do are formed into idyllic deep coves that are embodiment of a tropical paradise. SOme years ago only three beaches on this side were populated by local families and some traveler, Bottle Beach, Tong Nai Pan and Than Sadet. The other beaches more towards Hadrin came all much later and are now also populated by tourist. Some are still beautiful hideaways and ar from the baggage tourism overspoilling the island, after Ko Samui was kind of destroyed meanwhile by speculator and other money making individuals. Just the time can heal those wounds making actually. But I guess the locals have to get their lessons as everybody does on the planet.
There is a kind of street from Tong Nai Pan (just before the arrival in the village, still on the slope of the main street) that connects the beach for 4x4 jeeps etc. Bikes also possible, but not for "sunday bikers" ;-)
